TORONTO, Ont. • Toronto FC announced that goalkeeper Stefan Frei underwent successful surgery on his left ankle on Tuesday and is expected to be out four to six months.
The 25-year-old Swiss national was originally expected to miss eight to 10 weeks with a broken fibula. Further examination revealed that he had torn ligaments in his ankle.
Frei suffered the injury during training on March 24.
The ‘keeper appeared to catch his leg in the grass while going after a ball during a wet training game at BMO Field.
Frei has 20 wins, 34 losses and 25 ties in 81 appearances for Toronto with 19 clean sheets.
